lecture: Dancing in the Dark

Inertial Navigation MEMS sensors basics

Event_large

MEMS technology is in almost every smart device around us, ranging from smart watches to cell phones. This lecture will explore fundamental theoretical concepts of navigation with a particular aim towards inertial sensors and dead reckoning.

This lecture will cover everything needed to understand what is an
inertial measurement unit (IMU) and how it works and what are
limitations of such systems.
The lecture will cover:
Reference Coordinate Frames
Accelerometer - Basic Principles
Gyroscope - Basic Principles
Putting it together in an IMU
What is xDOF?
Acc + Gyro -> Coordinates
Drifts and other demons
Practical Demo

Having basic understanding of cartesian coordinates and trigonometry
should be sufficient. Don't get scared as elementary school knowledge
from 7th grade will suffice for this.
